Smithsonian's Campus on the Mall Lecture Series

This fall, researchers in the National Human Genome Research Institute's (NHGRI) Division of Intramural Research (DIR) will team up with the Smithsonian Institution to provide Washingtonians an inside look at the latest genetic research and an opportunity to learn about diagnostic and therapeutic techniques still on the scientific horizon.

Part of the Smithsonian's Campus on the Mall lecture series, this eight-week lecture series features leaders in the field of genetics who present evening seminars designed to shed light on genetic research, as well as serve as a guide to better understanding this area of science and medicine.

The series opens on October 13 with a discussion of the Human Genome Project (HGP), followed by a primer on basic concepts or "The ABC's of Genetics."

Later topics will include the genetics and treatment of cancer, issues associated with genetic testing, mapping the human genome, personality genes, rare diseases and gene therapy. The series is part of the DIR's Science Education and Outreach effort and will run through December 1.

Eight of the nine speakers are NHGRI/DIR investigators: Barbara Bowles Biesecker, Michael Blaese, Lawrence Brody, Francis Collins, Claire Francomano, Eric Green, Robert Nussbaum, and Jeffrey Trent. The ninth speaker is Dean Hamer, of the National Cancer Institute's Laboratory of Biochemistry.
