Time Expert Research Area/Focus 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. Kris Wetterstrand, M.S. Scientific Liaison to the Director for Extramural Activities Office of the Director NHGRI Kris Wetterstrand works in the Office of the Director as the Scientific Liaison to the Director for Extramural Activities. She has over ten years experience managing the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) grant portfolio, having participated in the Large-scale Sequencing Program, which managed the Human Genome Project, and the Human Microbiome Project, an effort to sequence the DNA of microbes (e.g. bacteria) that live in and on humans and the ENCODE Project, an effort to identify functional DNA elements in the human genome. Her background is in population genetics and molecular evolution. Donna Krasnewich, M.D., Ph.D. Program Director Division of Genetics and Developmental Biology NIGMS Donna Krasnewich is knowledgeable in diseases resulting from inborn errors of metabolism. Weiyi Mu Genetic Counseling Student Johns Hopkins University/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program NHGRI Weiyi Mu is a second year genetic counseling student. She got really interested in genetics when she was in middle school and have been studying science ever since! As a genetic counseling student, she sees patients with all different kinds of genetic or genetics-influenced conditions from Down syndrome to breast cancer. She learns about how genes affect their conditions and also learn to how to help them understand and live with their conditions. In her spare time she likes to play ping pong and write songs on the piano.   David Bodine, M.D., Ph.D. Investigator Genetics and Molecular Biology Branch Head Hematopoiesis Section NHGRI Dave Bodine is investigating the genetics of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells (PHSCs) to improve the effectiveness of bone marrow transplantation and to find better ways to use these unique cells for gene replacement therapy. He also is studying diseases that interfere with the ability of the stem cells to differentiate into red blood cells. Jennifer Walsh Genetic Counseling Student Social and Boston University Jennifer Walsh is currently a genetic counseling student at the Boston University Master's Program in Genetic Counseling. Her clinical experience includes preconception, prenatal, pediatric, and cancer genetic counseling. She also has experience working in a molecular diagnostic laboratory. Brandon Colby, M.D., M.B.A. CEO & Medical Director Existence Genetis Dr. Brandon Colby is the author of the book Outsmart Your Genes, which discusses genetic testing and the personal genomics revolution. Dr. Colby is also the CEO & Medical Director of Existence Genetics, a company that provides comprehensive genetic testing services to healthcare professionals. He practices Predictive Medicine in Los Angeles, California. Gretchen Skurla, M.S. Cancer Genetic Counselor Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Gretchen Skurla work is a Cancer Genetic Counselor for Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Ind. Patricia Devers, M.S. Genetic Counselor/Assistant Professor University of North Carolina Patricia Devers is a reproductive genetic counselor with over twelve years of experience in this field. Her focus is clinical, particularly working with families who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy who have an increased risk or a known birth defect or genetic condition in their pregnancy. Dawn Lee Genetic Counselor Dawn Lee is responsible for drafting tumor genetics test reports and novel variant assessments. In her previous position as a clinical cancer genetic counselor, she counseled patients on hereditary cancer syndromes. Erin Berry Genetic Counseling Student University of Arkansas for Medical Science Erin Berry is a second year genetic counseling student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science (UAMS). She will graduate in May 2012.   Chris Colon, M.S. Patient Outreach and Support Manager The Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation Chris Colon provides information and support to families dealing with pediatric cardiomyopathy through virtual communication (phone, email, chat, website.)   Janette Lawrence, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Massachusetts General Hospital's Cancer Center Janette Lawrence is a genetic counselor at Massachusetts General Hospital's Cancer Center. Her job is to identify families who are at risk for having a cancer predisposition gene syndrome and offer them counseling regarding their decision to have genetic testing. If families are found to have a gene mutation predisposing them to cancer(s), she helps them cope with the diagnosis, set up appointments for their cancer screening, and help identify other family members who may be at risk.   Jessica Hartman, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Jessica Hartman is currently working as a pediatric genetic counselor at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She helps families navigate the complexities surrounding genetic testing for their children with complex medical histories. She also provide families with support, information, and resources when their child is diagnosed with a genetic condition.   Emily Hardisty, M.S. Certified Genetic Counselor/Clinical Instructor University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Emily Hardisty work as a reproductive genetic counselor. She meets with couples to review their chance of having a child with a health problem and to discuss the testing options available to provide them with more information about the health of their pregnancy. She attempts to help them make decisions consistent with their values and beliefs.   Ilana Solomon Genetic Counseling Student Johns Hopkins University/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program NHGRI Ilana Solomon is currently a 2nd year genetic counseling student at the NHGRI. She is doing her thesis research on a Hereditary Colon Cancer, called Lynch Syndrome. 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Pam Schwartzberg, M.D., Ph.D. Senior Investigator Genetic Disease Research Branch NHGRI Pam Schwartzberg studies mouse models of primary immunodeficiencies (genetic diseases that impair the ability of the immune system to fight infections) and how specific disorders affect responses to infectious diseases. Belen Hurle, Ph.D Research Fellow Genome Technology Branch Program Director Intramural Training Office NHGRI The focus of Belen Hurle's research is the study of primate genomes as a means to enhance our understanding of human evolutionary biology. . Vence Bonham, J.D. Chief Education and Community Involvement Branch Office of the Director Associate Investigator Social Behavioral Research Branch NHGRI Vence Bonham researches the ethical, legal, social and policy implications of genomic discoveries, particularly health professionals' and lay persons' understanding of race, ethnicity and genetics. Barbara Biesecker, Ph.D. Associate Investigator Genetic Counselor Social and Behavioral Research Branch NHGRI Barb Biesecker directs the JHU/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program and has been doing genetic counseling for thirty years. Her primary interests are in achieving quality of life for those affected with a genetic condition or at risk. Bruce Korf, M.D., Ph.D. Professor and Chair Department of Genetics University of Alabama Birmingham Bruce Korf is a medical geneticist and serves as chair of the Department of Genetics at University of Alabama at Birmingham. He sees patients, conduct clinical research, and is involved in genetics education.
10:00 - 11:00 a.m.	Ellen Macnamara Genetic Counseling Student Johns Hopkins University/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program NHGRI	Ellen Macnamara is a first year Genetic Counseling student. She graduated from UVA with a degree in Biology. She has always been really interested in science and genetics. She loves reading crime novels and is really interested in forensic genetics.
	Julie Segre, Ph.D. Senior Investigator Genetics and Molecular Biology Branch Head Epithelial Biology Section NHGRI	Using contemporary genomic methodologies, Julie Segre's laboratory focuses on the role that bacteria and other small micro-organisms may play in human health and disease. The Segre laboratory estimates that approximately one million bacteria reside on each square centimeter of skin; many common skin conditions are associated with both impaired skin barrier function and increased microbial colonization. By sequencing the DNA of bacteria collected from the skin of humans and mouse models of human disease, her group investigates how these bacteria contribute to health and, conversely, how changes in the bacterial community structure might contribute to chronic skin disorders, such as eczema and psoriasis.
	Les G. Biesecker, Ph.D. Senior Investigator Genetic Disease Research Branch Head Human Development Section NHGRI	Les G. Biesecker directs a clinical and molecular genetic research program of inherited diseases.
	Gillian Hooker, Ph.D., Sc.M. Associate Director Genetic Counseling Training Program Social and Behavioral Research Branch NHGRI	Gillian Hooker is the associate director of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health/ National Human Genome Research Institute Genetic Counseling Training Program and a contracted staff scientist within the Social and Behavioral Research Branch of the NHGRI. Prior to entering the field of genetic counseling, she completed her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.
	Lucia Hindorff, Ph.D., M.P.H. Epidemiologist Office of Population Genomics Office of the Director NHGRI	Lucia Hindorff is working with a number of investigators around the country on a program that is designed to take the most promising genetic variants from recent studies and learn more about them in large populations with extensive data. She hopes to learn more about the different pathways that these variants are involved in and possibly identify some environmental factors that may modify disease associations. She is also one of the curators of the National Human Genome Research Institute Genome-Wide Association studies Catalog, a summary of findings from published genome-wide association studies.
	Laura Panos, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Baylor Medical College	Laura Panos is a genetic counselor that evaluates cancer patients and those with a family history of cancer. She counsels patients with any type of hereditary cancer syndrome.
	Kelle Steenblock,M.S., C.G.C. Senior Vice President Informed Medical Decisions	As the Senior Vice President of clinical services at Informed Medical Decisions, Kelle Steenblock oversaw 5 teams of genetic counselors providing clinical services in cancer, reproductive, neuro, ocular and cardiac genetics. She also provides telephone clinical genetic counseling for both reproductive and cancer genetics.
	Scott Michalski, M.S., G.C.G. Genetic Couselor Delnor Hospital	Scott Michalski provides genetic counseling for families regarding genetic risk for cancers, birth defects and genetic conditions.
	Surabhi Mulchandani, M.Sc., M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Couselor Children's Hospital of Philadelphia	Surabhi Mulchandani is a genetic counselor working at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Surabhi interprets complex genetic test results and see patients for diagnosis and counseling of genetic disorders.
	Kimberly Barr, M.S., C.G.C. Genetics Education Coordinator Genetics Department Kaiser Permanente	Kimberly Barr is a genetic counselor who has worked with families with all types of genetic disorders. In 2008, Ms. Barr stopped seeing clients to focus on developing educational resources for members and providers at her health care organization, Kaiser Permanente.
	Amy Gaviglio, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Minnesota Department of Health	Amy Gaviglio is a genetic counselor at the Minnesota Department of Health. Her particular focus is in newborn screening and ethical/legal issues with genetics and genetic testing.
	Sally Ann Rodriguez Genetic Couseling Student Johns Hopkins University/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program Baltimore, Md.	Sally Ann Rodriguez is a 2nd year student in the JHU/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program. Along with taking classes, she see patients on a weekly basis during clinical rotations. She has seen patients in many settings, including prenatal, pediatric, connective tissue disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases. She is also working on a Masters thesis, which focuses on assessing genetic literacy in a Spanish-speaking populations.
	Nisha Isaac, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Couselor Catholic Health Initiative	Nisha Isaac currently provides cancer genetic counseling services to adults. On occasion, she also provides adult genetic counseling (Huntington's disease, adult polycystic kidney disease, thrombophilia/hemochromatosis, Klinefelter syndrome etc.). Part of her role involves giving presentations (in person, or via webinars) about topics related to genetics.
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.	Laura Lyman Rodriguez, Ph.D. Director Office of Policy, Communications and Education Office of the Director NHGRI	Laura Lyman Rodriguez is the Director for the Office of Policy, Communications, and Education at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health (NIH). She works to develop and implement policy for research initiatives at the NHGRI, design communication and outreach strategies to engage the public in genomic science, and prepare health care professionals for the integration of genomic medicine into clinical care. Laura is particularly interested in the policy and ethics questions related to the inclusion of human research participants in genomics and genetics research and sharing human genomic data through broadly used research resources (e.g., databases).
	Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D. Director National Human Genome Research Institute	Eric D. Green is the Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, a position he had held since late 2009. NHGRI is the largest organization in the world solely dedicated to genomics research. Previously, Dr. Green was the NHGRI Scientific Director, Chief of the NHGRI Genome Technology Branch, and Director of the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center. Since the early 1990s, Dr. Green has been extensively involved in efforts to map, sequence, and understand eukaryotic genomes. His work included significant, start-to-finish involvement in the Human Genome Project, and more recently focused on utilizing large-scale DNA sequencing to address important problems in genomics, genetics, and biomedicine. .
Noon - 1:00 p.m.	Arjun Prasad, Ph.D. Post-doctoral Fellow NIH Intramural Sequencing Center NHGRI	Arjun Prasad is a post-doctoral Fellow working in bioinformatics at NHGRI, and he is interested in figuring out new ways to use new DNA sequencing technology and computers to learn about how genomes work, evolve, and influence human health.
	Phyllis Frosst, Ph.D. Senior Advisor for Policy, Communications and Strategic Alliances National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) NIH	Dr. Frosst focuses on a range of therapeutic and translational policy efforts for the National Center for Advancing Translational Therapeutics, and educates a range of audiences on the center's activities and opportunities. Dr. Frosst also works with therapeutic development projects such as Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND), increasing interactions with academic and industry partners. Dr. Frosst has B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from McGill University in Montreal Canada, and a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Structure and Chemistry from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif.
	Jenny Gordon, Ph.D. Genetic Counseling Student Johns Hopkins University/NHGRI Genetic Counseling Training Program NHGRI	Jenny Gordon graduated with a bachelor's and Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering, but found that she desired a more service-oriented career. She was drawn to genetic counseling because of combination of science and counseling components, and she finds genetics to be a dynamic and very interesting field!
	Heather Junkins, M.S. Scientific Program Analyst Office of Population Genomics Office of the Director NHGRI	Heather Junkins works in the Office of Population Genomics on a variety of projects that aim to promote the application of genomic technologies to population-based studies. Included in the portfolio are projects that are developing standard phenotype and exposure measures for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and using well-characterized cohorts to follow-up on putative casual variants. She is also the curator of the NHGRI GWAS Catalog.
	Robin Troxell, B.S., M.S. Genetic Counselor University of Missouri	Robin Troxell is a pediatric and prenatal genetic counselor. She has a special interest in perinatal hospice.
	Sandy Woo, M.S. Genetic Counselor Kaiser Permanente	Sandy Woo works with patients and their families who either have a genetic condition or birth defect, are at risk for one or have a risk to have a child with such. She provides education, facilitates genetic testing decisions and psychosocial support.
	Sharon Chan Genetic Counseling Student Brandeis University	Sharon Chan is a second year MSc student at Brandeis University studying Genetic Counseling. She has done rotations in cancer, prenatal, and pediatric genetics.
	Christine Kobelka,M.Sc., L.C.G.C., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Kaiser Permanente	Christine Kobelka is a genetic counselor working with individuals and families to assess family histories, discuss and interpret genetic testing, and provide support and resources to patients.
	Julie Rousseau, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Children's Hospital Boston	Following many years in clinical genetic counseling, the majority of which was spent in pediatric genetics, Julie Rousseau currently work in a laboratory setting. In this position, she interprets DNA results and help providers determine which test(s) are most appropriate for their patients.
	Tracy Futch, Ph.D, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor	Tracy Futch is a molecular biologist and certified genetic counselor. She provides genetic counseling as well as guidance and decision support for genomic medicine to patients, providers and payers.
	Diane Masser-Frye, M.S., M.S.W. Genetic Counselor Rady's Children's Hospital San Diego	Diane Masser-Frye works at a Children's Hospital with families of children with genetic conditions. She also consult with an agency that provides services to people of all ages with developmental disabilities. Her role is to help these individuals and families understand the role of genetics in their families and how their conditions are inherited.
	Ami Rosen, M.S., C.G.C. Project Coordinator/Genetic Counselor Emory University	Ami Rosen has provided genetic counseling to people at risk for developing Huntington's disease for the past 10 years. She is also a neurogenetics research coordinator, well-versed in the ethical research coordinator, well-versed in the ethical concerns of human subjects research and DNA banking.
	Kyla Patek, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor The University of Texas Health Center at Houston	Kyla Patek works as a genetic counselor in a large neurosurgery practice. She is involved in counseling patients that may be at risk for inherited vascular disorders as well as occasionally cancer predisposition syndromes that involve brain tumors. She also works continuously on research aimed at better understanding the genetics of brain aneurysms
	Julie Wynn, M.S. Genetic Counselor Columbia University Medical Center	Julia Wynn is a genetic counselor and research coordinator at CUMC. She coordinates a cardiogenetics clinic as well as a research study of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
	Jeanie Schaller, M.S. Professional Support Sepcialist Myriad Genetics	Jeanie Schaller is a Professional Support Specialist at a commercial genetic testing laboratory who has training as a genetic counselor. She talks with doctors and patients about hereditary cancer syndromes.
	Maureen May, M.S. Genetic Counselor Cleveland Clinic	Maureen May is a clinical genetic counselor working with individuals at risk for hereditary cancers, and with children and families with a possible genetic disorder.
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.	Mike Dougherty, B.A., Ph.D. Director of Education American Society of Human Genetics	Mike Dougherty is responsible for developing and maintaining genetics education activities that advance the mission of ASHG, with a particular focus on high school, undergraduate, and graduate/postgraduate education. This includes hosting the world's largest essay contest devoted to genetics, conducting research to advance understanding about the teaching and learning of genetics, and programming activities for trainee professional development at ASHG's Annual Meeting.
2:00 - 3:00 p.m.	Jennifer Sloan, M.S., Ph.D., C.G.C. Genetics Counselor Genetic Disease Research Branch Division of Intramural Research NHGRI	Jennifer Sloan provides genetic counseling for patients with a metabolic condition called methylmalonic acidemia enrolled in a research study at the National Institues of Health.
	Anna Rossoshek, M.S., M.B.A. Scientific Administrative Analyst Division of Intramural Research NHGRI	Anna Rossoshek's duties require her to be very familiar with the entire Extramural grants portfolio. She often does a variety of portfolio analysis projects as part of her routine responsibilities. She is responsible for the Institute's R13 conference grant portfolio, in addition to being an active member of the Knockout Mouse Project program and GTEx program. She has many administrative responsibilities, including but not limited to conference/workshop event planning, negotiating contracts, budgeting, acting as the liaison for a variety of requests from the Office of the Director including budget and policy requests, as well as being the point of contact and recruiter for all program analyst contractors in the office. Her scientific background makes her proficient in mouse genetics and genomics, and her business background makes her skillful in administrative subject matter.
	Erin Cram, Ph.D. Professor Biology Department Northeastern University	Erin Cram has been a Biology professor at Northeastern University since 2006, where she teaches Genetics and Molecular Cell Biology. Before that, she studied at UNC Chapel Hill, UC Berkeley, and Princeton. Her lab is a "worm" lab - they use the nematode C. elegans as a model organism. She is investigating how the structure of tissues controls cell behaviors like cell migration.
	Craig Adamski, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Sparrow Hospital/Hurley Medical Center	Craig Adamski is a pediatric genetic counselor and cystic fibrosis newborn screening genetic counselor at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. He also does prenatal and cancer genetic counseling through Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan.
	Ian Wallace,, M.S. Genetic Counselor Pullman Regional Hospital	Ian Wallace is a clinical genetic counselor who recently launched a new genetics clinic in a rural area. He sees patients for any genetic indication, to include prenatal, pediatric, adult, cancer referrals.
	Daniela Iacoboni, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine	Daniela Iacoboni is a clinical laboratory and pediatric genetic counselor. She assists in the genetic evaluation of primarily children with a collection of health issues to determine if there is an underlying syndrome or condition.
	Stephanie Gandomi, M.S., C.G.C. Community Health Supervisor State of California Prenatal Screening Program University of California, Davis Medical Center	Stephanie Gandomi is a prenatal screening genetic counselor/supervising coordinator for the State of California prenatal screening program. Her role includes coordinating all aspects of our State-run prenatal screening program for all women throughout California. She works in a setting that incorporates both clinical genetic counseling and public health aspects of prenatal care.
	Ashley Supik, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Riverside Regional Medical Center	Ashley Supik is a cancer genetic counselor. She works with people that have a personal or family history of cancer. She tries to determine if they might be at increased risk for cancer and how it might impact their medical management.
	Kelly Donohue, M.S. Genetic Counselor West Penn Allegheny Health System	Kelly Donahue is a prenatal genetic counselor. She speaks with families that are at risk to have children with genetic conditions. This risk may be based on their family history or be signaled by results of specific blood work or ultrasound during their pregnancy.
	Toni I. Pollin, M.S., Ph.D. Assistant Professor University of Maryland School of Medicine.	Toni Pollin has a background in both genetic counseling and human genetics. She studies the role of genetic factors in complex diseases, particularly diabetes and dyslipidemia, and the interaction of genetic with lifestyle and environmental factors. She also co-leads a human genetics PhD program and teaches graduate, genetic counseling and medical students.
4:00 - 5:00 p.m.	Divya Moorthy, M.S. Genetic Counselor	Divya Moorthy's undergraduate degree is in medicine and she graduated with a Masters in human genetics in May 2011 from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. She is originally from India.
	Eleonora Goldberg, Ph.D. Senior Manager	Dr. Goldberg has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over ten years. Most of her experience has been in the field as a Medical Science Liaison. Currently, she is working in-house in the Medical Communications Department. Her primary responsibility includes reviewing the scientific accuracy of Commercial and Scientific Affairs pieces routing through the Material Approval and Compliance (MAC) process. These reviews include, but are not limited to: promotional aids, slide decks for speaker bureaus, advisory boards, and RMLs use, training materials, websites, outcomes reports, reprints, and FAQs.
	Amanda Herbert, M.S. Certified Genetic Counselor Center for Clinical Trials	Amanda Herbert is a genetic counselor at the Center for Clinical Trials, a group that focuses on the treatment of Lysosomal Storage Diseases
	Angela Filose Genetic Counselor Kaiser Permanente	Angela Filose works as a full-time genetic counselor for a Kaiser hospital, working with prenatal, pediatric, and hereditary cancer patients. .
	Niki Lovick, M.S. Genetic Counseling Student California State University, Stanislaus	Niki Lovick is a graduate student in genetic counseling at CSU Stanislaus. She has had clinical experience in prenatal, pediatric, and cancer genetics.
	Julia Su, M.S. Genetic Counseling Student Sarah Lawrence College	Julia Su is a second year genetic counseling student from Sarah Lawrence College (graduate May 2012). She has rotated through several genetics clinics in the New York area and Toronto. She is highly passionate about genetics, as well as the integration of psychosocial counseling in clinical genetics services.
	Gabrielle Jervis, M.S. Genetic Counseling Student All Children's Hospital	Gabrielle Jervis is a laboratory based genetic counselor at a children's hospital. Her responsibilities include coordination of complex molecular testing and research assistant for the molecular cytogenomics lab.
	Jenna Guiltinan, M.S. Genetic Counseling Student	Jenna Guiltinan is a genetic counseling student, class of 2013, earning a Masters of Science. She learns about genetic disease and observes genetic counseling sessions. When she graduates in June, 2013, she plans to pass a board exam and become a certified genetic counselor.
	Regine Lim, M.S., C.G.C. Genetic Counselor Long Island College Hospital	Regine Lim works primarily with prenatal patients in an OB/GYN department, discussing genetic testing options, prenatal screening, and genetic test interpretation. Occasionally, she will see patients with a personal and/or family history of breast/ovarian cancer.
	Becky Clark, M.S. Genetic Counselor Oregon Health and Science University	Becky Clark is a genetic counselor and research associate in an ophthalmic genetics department. She counsels patients on inherited retinal disorders and manages a repository and database for genetic testing research.
