As the pace of genomic research accelerates, understanding the role of genomics in disease risk and its integration into clinical care is increasingly important to critically examine how new genomic knowledge will benefit all populations. The Genomics and Health Disparities Interest Group provides a forum to connect individuals from different scientific disciplines across the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and researchers in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area engaged in genomics and health disparities research, as well as provide opportunities for professional development, networking and community engagement.
In addition to establishing a listserv for announcements and information sharing, the group has regular meetings on campus featuring invited speakers and members of the interest group presenting and discussing their research. The objective is to provide a space where these important, timely topics can be explored and to provide an opportunity for members to both learn and teach.
The group is currently comprised of members from across the NIH, as well as members from the CDC, Howard University, Catholic University, and George Mason University. The target audience includes all career stages at NIH (post-bac, post-doc, staff, investigators, etc.), as well as from the external academic community.
