Biography

Katie Sandlin brings a strong background in genomics education and community engagement to her role as an Education Outreach Specialist in the Education and Community Involvement Branch (ECIB) at NHGRI. She oversees the ECIB’s genomic data science and bioinformatics educational initiatives, including coordinating the Genome: Unlocking Life’s Code resource library.

Previously, Katie served as Director of Curriculum for the Genomics Education Partnership. She oversaw the GEP’s development of genomics curricula that enabled students to construct gene models using bioinformatics tools. Further, she coordinated and delivered in-person and virtual training, workshops, and symposia. Her efforts helped GEP reach more than 14,000 students and drive a 165% increase in faculty membership.

Katie has more than a decade of teaching and curriculum design experience ranging from middle school to college-level courses and has won awards for her outstanding quality of teaching. During her time as a Teach For America corps member in Memphis, Tennessee, Katie spearheaded student academic advancement, as evidenced by a cumulative 38.4% increase in the number of students scoring proficient and advanced on the science end-of-year standardized test.

Ms. Sandlin is a proud first-generation college student and former McNair Scholar who obtained both her Bachelor and Master of Science in Biology from The University of Alabama. Her graduate research focused on the evolution of the insulin signaling pathway across metazoans.
